I learned how to listen in the north.
I grew up in the boreal forest of Northern Saskatchewan. The nearest doctor was two hours away, and getting the mail was an hour down the gravel road.
Life followed the seasons. When storms closed the roads or the power went out, we used wood stoves, leaned on each other, and shared stories. In that place, you couldn't avoid problems. You had to face them.
I attended a one-room school from Kindergarten through Grade 7. By the time I was eight, I was driving a boat and taking my Kokum to our fishing spots. We didn't have screens or busy schedules. We had the outdoors, time, and the guidance of our elders.
Growing up that way taught me to notice people and place. That early sense of resilience shapes everything I write.
